biography :
Jesús CASTRO BALBI was born in Chicha Alta (Peru) and discovered for music and the guitar at a very early age.
As a concert performer, he gratuated from the Peruvian National Conservatory of Music in Lima in 1972, and then went on the complete his studies in Europe between 1973 and 1975 under the masters, Maria Luisa Anido, Vicente Asencio, Leo Brouwer, Abel Carlevaro and Oscar Ghiglia. Under the direction of José Tomás and Oscar Esplá, he was the first guitarist in Spain to be awarded the title of “Doctor of Music, Profesor of Guitar” at the Alicante National Conservatory in 1975.
In the mid 1970s, he won first prize in numerous international guitar competitions : "Alirio Dìaz" (Caracas - Venezuela), "Francisco Tárrega" (Benicasim - Spain) and "Andrés Segovia" (Plama de Mallorca - Spain). He was also awarded the "prize for the best interpretation of Tárrega works" (Benicásim - Spain).
